Denny Hayward – Inlaid & Turned Wood
While in a high school woodworking class, Denny Hayward recognized his passion for turning wood. Years later, when relocating from Rapid City, South Dakota to Southwest Michigan, Denny brought a wealth of experience and that deep-seated passion with him. He enjoys working with many species of woods to bring out the trees’ internal beauty, aromas, and feel. In the last few years his focus has been on mineral-inlayed pieces.
Plates, platters, lidded boxes, vases and bowls are turned from hardwoods and exotics, as well as local species from Michigan. Denny then uses colorful crushed minerals to create designs and pictures on the turned work using an inlaying technique to embed the colors into the wood. He employs many different beautiful minerals of the Black Hills of South Dakota, to the red stones of Lake Superior, and others from around the world. The inspiration of adding minerals to wood is only natural, he says, as it enhances the beauty of both, coming from "Mother Earth."
Denny uses time-honored techniques of the turnings to create pieces whose shapes, designs and combinations of different wood species are generated from his heart. All turnings, he feels, "Cry out to be handled."
